You Are Not Using These 3 Ingredients In Smoothies and You Should Be

A smoothie is the ultimate meal replacement.  You can add protein, veggies, fruit, chia seeds… anything you can imagine really!

And one of the best things is you can add very healthy foods that you might not normally eat and just drink it and be done with it.  You can even make it taste good while you pack a huge nutritional punch into your day with very little effort.  Here are 3 of my go to ingredients that I normally don’t eat any other time except when they are in my morning smoothie.

  1. Ginger- Ginger is a spicy yellow root.  It is very aromatic and adds a little subtle heat to the smoothie.  Ginger is an anti-inflammatory food that also ramps up the immune system making it much easier to fight off infections and recover from injuries.

Ginger has also been used to settle upset stomachs and lifts the mood.  I like to add about a tablespoon sized chunk to my smoothies.

  1. Turmeric- Similar to ginger, turmeric is an aromatic root.  It is bright orange and is the primary ingredient used in curry powders.  Turmeric is also an extraordinary anti-inflammatory food and has shown remarkable ability to kill cancer cells.  About a teaspoon of raw turmeric goes in my smoothies almost every day

3.  Maca Powder-  Maca is a root grown in Peru and other arid regions.  It has a semi

sweet flavor and is a powerful mood enhancer, source of vitamins and minerals

and endurance enhancer.  1-2 tablespoon of this powder is just about perfect!

Here is the recipe for my usual morning smoothie

1 filtered cup water

1 cup mixed berries (blueberry, strawberry, cranberry)

2 tablespoons chia seeds (soaked 20 minutes)

3 large leaves of kale

¼ cup spinach

1 tablespoon raw ginger

1 tablespoon raw turmeric

1 tablespoon maca poweder

1 tablespoon hemp protein powder

1/3 cup chocolate almond milk

Place all ingredients in a blender and pulse until smooth.
