This time of year is full of nasty little illnesses like colds, coughs, flu and a host of other things that can happen.
If you live up in the north portion of the U.S. I recommend a vitamin D3 supplement this time of year since your body is not naturally producing it from sunlight exposure like it does in the late spring through later summer and early fall. Vitamin D plays an important role in immune function. Funny how more people get sick in the winter months right?
Diet is the next most important aspect of keeping illness at bay. Keep your system humming at near 100% and even the nastiest bug has its work cut out for it trying to get you sick. This smoothie recipe is a little something I call the “Flu Killer” since it is loaded with essential nutrients your body needs this time of year.
You can order the spirullina from nuts.com. They have some great stuff and I would also recommend their maca powder and hemp protein powder since its pretty awesome as well. Mixing the two is actually a great protein powder. The rest of the ingredients you can get at your local grocery store.
1 cup filtered water
1 cup coconut milk or water
1 cup mixed organic berries (I prefer a mix of blueberries, strawberries and cranberries)
1 tablespoon golden flax seeds, freshly ground
1 tablespoon chia seeds, soaked for at least 20 minutes prior to use
1 tablespoon spirullina powder
Combine all ingredients in a blender and mix until smooth.
Kill that flu.
