It’s September here in Wisconsin and the morning air has started to have a slight chill on it. One of my favorite parts of Fall is getting up early and having a hot cup of coffee before the business of the day starts.
Coffee is loaded with anti-oxidants, helpful molecules that scavenge free radicals and help prevent disease. It also has caffeine, which in small amounts, can also be beneficial to people. Especially those of us who aren’t perfectly adapted to getting up before sunrise (yep that’s me!).
While coffee is good on its own I take 2 simple steps each morning to not only make my coffee taste better but also to add a boost of nutrition. That’s right! You can make coffee nutritious! The 2 things I add every morning are
1) Extra-virgin coconut oil- adding the oil to the coffee mellows the flavor similar to cream. It also makes the acids naturally found in coffee less of a problem for those with sensitive stomachs. Adding this healthy oil also adds all the phytonutrients and healthy fats found in coconut oil to coffee. Medium chain fatty acids (MCF’s) provide instant energy so adding them to coffee helps create a balanced boost of morning power!
2) Powdered Cinnamon- cinnamon has a naturally warm and inviting scent and flavor. It blends well with coffee and also happens to have numerous health benefits. Probably the single best thing adding cinnamon to your coffee does is help to regulate blood sugar. Cinnamon has been shown to help keep blood sugar levels even during the day and what better time of day to include it in your diet than with your morning coffee?
Play around with these 2 ingredients for a few days and find out how much you like to add. I personally add about a tablespoon of coconut oil and about a ½ teaspoon of cinnamon. Happy Fall and don’t forget to check out this months cooking classes!
